The devastating news was confirmed on February 8 by his management company, MHD Promotions, which had previously launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his medical care. The fundraiser, initially set up while Cooney was battling for his life, has since raised over £47,000 ($58,300)—including a £20,000 ($24,800) donation from Irish boxing legend Conor McGregor. Now, the funds will go directly to his grieving family.
Cooney sustained the fatal injury during his Celtic Super Featherweight title fight against Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall in Belfast on February 1. He collapsed in the ninth round and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered a critical intracranial hemorrhage. Despite emergency surgery, the fighter was unable to recover.
